Consumers in the UK are turning to cannabidiol (CBD) to treat insomnia, anxiety, and other conditions exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic.
According to a report published this month by British CBD marketplace Alphagreen, UK residents spent $183.2 million on CBD products during the first quarter of 2020.
“The key here is that with people feeling anxious, having trouble sleeping, and, in some cases, feeling let down by the traditional health system, they have looked for alternatives,” says Alphagreen CEO Alexej Pikovsky.
Survey results suggest up to 8.4 million Britons have purchased or are planning to purchase a CBD product this year, with 42% using it to manage pain, 21% using it to treat insomnia, and 19% using it for anxiety.
Over half of consumers made their first CBD purchase in the past year and nearly 40% are taking CBD in addition to prescription medication.
“People are increasingly turning to more natural health and wellness solutions to add to their self-care routines,” says medical cannabis and CBD specialist Dr. Dani Gordon. “Patients are looking towards natural remedies to mitigate and soothe symptoms of common conditions such as anxiety, as well as other mental and physical health concerns.”
Another factor in the increased demand for CBD is time. People who are out of work have all the time in the world to research what continues to be a confusing topic.
Alphagreen’s research suggests that nearly 40% of British CBD users bought from online stores, 14% from health stores, and 13% from pharmacies.
We can expect to see an increase in CBD and other holistic remedies as the coronavirus pandemic persists. If you are experiencing depression, anxiety, or other mental health issues as a result of the pandemic, the World Health Organization recommends following a schedule (even at home), keeping up with your hygiene, doing things you enjoy, limiting alcohol, getting plenty of exercise, eating healthy meals, minimizing exposure to the news, and maintaining regular contact with friends and family.
